During the winter, we find that a few parents request that their child(ren) be allowed to stay inside during recess. To assist us in planning for adequate supervision, you are reminded that you need to send a note if your child is to stay inside. We can honor a note from you for a maximum period of two days. If your child needs to stay in for an extended period of time (3 or more days), you will need to send a doctor’s written excuse. Please send your child(ren) to school dressed appropriately for the weather. If a student does not have snow pants or boots, they are not allowed to play in the snow. However, they will still be sent outside and restricted to hard surface areas. No snowball throwing is allowed. Guidelines for recess (including wind chill) are:
Temperature/Weather Conditions | Clothing required |
Below 55° F | Jacket |
Soggy, wet conditions (i.e. Spring thaw) | Boots |
Below 40° F but no snow | Coat, Hat, Gloves |
Below 40° F with snow | Above plus Boots & Snow Pants |
Below 0° F |

Notification of School Closings/Delay
St. Francis Catholic School follows the Marshalltown Community School District regarding school closings due to inclement weather. Do not call the church, rectory or school. Local television and radio stations (on the air and/or on their websites) will provide the official announcements. Decisions for the Marshalltown District apply to all Catholic schools. We may not specifically be named. If weather becomes severe during the day necessitating early dismissal, that announcement will also be made by the television and radio stations (on the air and/or on their web sites).
Transportation – Emergency Closings
Parents are strongly encouraged to be aware of the possibility of an early dismissal and make arrangements to provide transportation for their children promptly at the time of early dismissal.
Child Care During School Closing/Delay
The school offers child care for students on days that school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather. Contact Terri Guenther-Mayer for more information regarding Child Care.
The principal has the discretion to dismiss a student from school for wearing anything that interferes with the learning environment: (Certain earings, varying hairstyles, etc.)
Students not in accordance with the St. Francis Catholic School dress code policy.
The official jumper, skirt and skort may be purchased through the Dennis Uniform Company. Call St. Francis Catholic School for information. St. Francis Catholic School has a uniform room located at the St. Mary Attendance Center where new and used uniform items may be purchased.
